1. To get the Marilyn Monroe vintage, short wavey look use the InStyler with the ¾” setting, begin curling at the nape of the neck and work your way, section by section, towards the crown. Prepare each section with a thermal holding spray or a hairspray.
2. To create a Marilyn curl, wrap a medium to large section of hair around the barrel.  Close the InStyler, hold for 5-10 seconds, open, and drop the curl out
3. With the first section, at the nape of your neck, curl the hair all in the same direction.
4. With the next section up, curl in the opposite direction as the last section.
5. Continue alternating each section back and forth throughout the entire head of hair.
6. If you have long, thick, resistant hair, curl the section and then pin the curl so it can cool in the curl form – when hair heats and cools in the same position, it will last longer.
7. Once you have curled all over, use a fine bristle brush or even better a Mason Pearson brush, to smooth out the hair.  Since you alternated the curl in each section you will see a wave pattern forming as you brush the sections out.
8. If you have a fringe, you will want to pay attention to what you want at the beginning, whether you want a smooth fringe or something that is wavy but off your face.
9. To complete the look, use a serum or gloss to smooth curls and waves and secure the style with a holding hairspray.

1. To get the Miranda Kerr hair with loose waves begin by sectioning your hair horizontally and taking a section from the nape of your neck. Make sure to spray the hair with holding spray and then start to curl with your InStyler.

So we asked expert Hair stylist Dean Banowetz if any old wives tales for hair were true and if we could put some inexpensive natural products on our hair that could help it look and feel better. Here’s what he said:

What foods can you put on your hair?

Eggy hair

It may sound and feel strange but a plane egg could do what all the expensive shampoos promise. We know that proteins are good for the hair and add strength and life, well eggs are full of protein. You could use the egg on it’s own in your hair, but getting it out can be a bit messy. So whisk the egg with your normal shampoo and wash your hair. Beware not to use too hot water as this could give you the scrambled egg look.

Mayonnaise for added moisture

Do you have dry frizzy hair? Well you’ll be having ketchup on your chips from now onwards and saving the mayo for your lovely locks. Mix 2 teaspoons of natural eucalyptus tree oil with 1/4 cup of mayo and use in the shower post-shampoo, letting it saturate your locks for ten minutes. This will add moisture into dry and frizzy hair.

Baking soda to add shine to hair

Baking soda is great for hair, fact. Add a pinch of baking soda to shampoo whenever you wash your hair to keep it shiny, smooth and healthy. This is also useful for people who use a lot of products in their hair because the baking soda removes product build up. Make sure you only use a small amount of baking soda, because if you use too much, it can dry out your hair.

Flour and Coconut Milk

Our hair needs protein and moisture, just like the rest of us. And guess what, coconut milk has some lovely protein in it. So take a cup of coconut milk and 2 tablespoons of flour and apply to hair like a mask. Leave on for 20 minutes then rinse it all out. Follow with a your normal shampoo and conditioner.  This will add moisture and protein to the hair.

Minty shoots

Do you want to decrease your oily scalp? We thought you might. First of all boil some water then add generous amounts of fresh mint. Strain the liquid and add one part water to two parts shampoo. Shampoo your hair normally and follow with some nice conditioner. For best results repeat this process once a week.

Strawberry hair

Do you have damaged hair? If so you’ll need to add some lovely protein to rebuild that damaged hair shaft.  A great way to do this is with strawberries and our old friend mayonnaise. Mash strawberries and mayonnaise with a fork until completely blended. Apply mask to damp, clean hair; then cover your head with a shower cap. Apply a warm towel (throw one in the dryer while making your hair mask to warm it up) over the shower cap. The heat will allow the mask to penetrate your hair shaft. Then when you’re done, rinse your hair with shampoo and conditioner.

Coconut Oil on your hair

Not exactly food, but great for the hair and it has the word coconut in there. All you need to do is create a moisture mask with some of your old Coconut suntan oil.  Rinse your hair with warm water, apply the oil from the palm of your hand and work it into your hair. Now, wrap your head in a towel or shower cap and wear all night. Next day, use a moisturising or gentle baby shampoo to wash out the greasiness.

Alcohol for shiny hair

Use alcohol to remove product buildup and enhance shiny hair. Whisk a shot of vodka, honey, avocado and egg yolk in a mixing bowl until it’s all nice and creamy. Apply the fruity eggy alcoholic mixture to washed, damp hair. Leave mask on for 30 minutes and rinse with warm water. Shampoo, condition and style hair as usual.
